I have finally made the mincemeat!
yes I have finally made it!
I have made my mincemeat for this Christmas, and it was as easy as normal, so if any of you would like to experience really nice homemade, and easy to make, mincemeat, here is the recipe,
3 lemons
8oz sultanas
8oz currents
8oz raisins
8oz caster sugar
1lb of grated bramley apple
8oz suet, vegetable or beef
1tsp ground ginger
1tsp ground cloves
1tsp ground nutmeg
eighth of a pint of sherry
– zest all lemons, put the zest in a saucepan with a little water, and boil until slightly softened, while this is happening juice the lemons and reserve the juice
– put the sugar in a large mixing bowl, add lemon zest to this
– add grated apple, spices, suet, sherry and all dried fruit
– mix well, and add the juice of the lemons
– mix again, then cover, and leave overnight
– pack into sterile dry jars to within 2cm of the top of the jar
– cover with waxed discs and lids
– store in a cool place
this makes approx 108 mince pies!
Please let me know if any of you make it and what you think, it is really is far superior to any shop bought mincemeat or pies!

YUUUMMYY! I’ve never made my own before but it looks so delicious in your photos that I may well have to remedy that. Have the in-laws descending on us on Boxing day so I may attempt to show-off with homemade mince pies – thanks for the recipie.

Thank you for the recipe. I’ve never made mincemeat before and it was so easy! Just making my second batch! The first lot of mince pies disappeared almost immediately! I didn’t have any sherry so substituted port which worked fine. Have added Cointreau to it this time….smells gorgeous!! Thanks for your brilliant blog, have enjoyed watching your lovely work developing. Happy Christmas and good luck next year.
